As far as I’m concerned, the essence of this competition is to explore one’s potential and try out the dream of business in a bigger and more real platform, and the beauty of uncertainty. OVAL welcomes all with the dream or doubt——CAN I SUCCEED IN BUSINESS? CAN I DEAL WITH UNCERTAINTY? As a law student, I did not believe there is any value for me to try a business contest, cause I was not trained or had any advantage compared to the business majored ones. But I had the vogue dream to do something in business, become someone with what it takes. And OVAL was my chance to try out. What’s more, I had the most amazing teammates; our unexpected corporation kind of shocked us. That is the beauty of uncertainty.
What I gained from my participation in OVAL Business Contest are self-confidence and the ability of trust. I did not expect to get a good ranking because of my major and all the uncertainty——the ability of teammates, the corporation level among the team , the understanding of the topic, even the taste of judges. No one could claim that he or she must be the one. But during all the discussing, drafting, reediting and presentation, we gradually gain good understanding of our own SWOT and the situation——whether our idea was practical, whether we can handle it in 15 or 20 minutes presentation and whether we three can handle the idea as individual and team . That is a process where we grew confidence and understanding of ourselves and where we stood.
As for the cross-cultural communication, we did not expect culture shock cause compared to western world, China, Japan and Korea seem so close and the same that no shock should ever occur. But it is extremely shocking when I discovered my teammates felt homesick and found it challenging to adapt to China, traffic, communication, food etc. The difference between way how we expect things to work in one way and the real life was beyond my expectation, and it was the comparison that reminded me to think in other’s shoes.
Among all the factors, great team were all that made our success: J from Korea was an expert in consulting and business, while Risa from Japan rocked in communication and great ideas. They were amazing teammates that made our team so productive and fun. The balance among us three was the key to build our FINE idea and rocked the presentation. All the discussion and design was a great chance to learn about different mind flows and cultures. OVAL is not just about business. It is not a competition of individual but a team of three.
I did not expect great thing for OVAL until I became one of the finalist. And it may be the case for many. If I may share any experience that is experience is the key.
Great thx to all the staff!
